  Friendship Books.

Friendship books (also known as "FBs" in their abbreviated form) are small booklets made by stapling paper together, or are sometimes just sheets or strips of paper. They are usually decorated and the person who starts the book writes their name and address as the first person sending the book. People often include a list of interests as well. The FB is then passed around from friend to friend, and can often also become a way for one to meet new penpals.

Most people hope to see the book again once it is full so they add their return address to the back cover of the book too, or inscribe "Return to Sender" on it. People also sometimes make FBs for someone else rather than themselves, in which case they write the name and address of the recipient on the front/at the top. Some people find friendship books fun because you can see where they have been in a trail back to the original sender/recipient.

How to create a Friendship Book:

  • STEP 1: Buy a blank book or special scrapbook pages and a scrapbook binder or cover.
  • STEP 2: Dedicate a page or section in the book to each friend that you want to include.
  • STEP 3: Sort through photographs, notes, letters, ticket stubs, souvenirs, cards and other items that remind you of each particular friend.
  • STEP 4: Use the items to create interesting collages on the pages.
  • STEP 5: Add handwritten or typed words. Examples: "Our Favorite Hangout" and "On May 2, 2000, we took a road trip." Use phrases that have meaning to the two of you: "Cool, dude!"
  • STEP 6: Frame photos with scrapbook paper to dress them up. Add decorations such as paper shapes or designs.
  • STEP 7: Ask each friend to write a description of his or her favorite time spent with you and include these descriptions in the book.
  • STEP 8: Make a special cover for each friend's section in the book by drawing or creating an illustration of his or her name.
  • STEP 9: Design a cover for the book and call it "Special Friends," "Cherished Moments" or some other title that has meaning to you.
